Ensuring Consistency During a Remodeling Project

Any remodeling project can seem intimidating and overwhelming. Having an idea of what steps you can take will help ensure your project runs smoothly. At Corso Construction, we have 30+ years of renovating and remodeling experience. We can help take the intimidation out of your project and provide a consistent experience every time.

Here are some of our best tips for ensuring consistency during a remodeling project:

Make a Plan

One of the top ways to ensure your project is consistent with your goals and budget is to have a solid renovation plan that clearly defines your goals for your remodeling project. Your planning process will involve not only looking at what you want for the renovation but also what you need to get out of it. Are you looking for greater energy efficiency, or maybe you need an extra bathroom? Do you need to add a bedroom or home office? Maybe you are looking for a kitchen remodel, or you want to enlarge your existing garage.

This detailed remodeling plan should include an outline of the work you wish to complete, your timeline, and your budget. In your budget, you will want to include items like building materials and labor. Remember to reserve at least 10% for unexpected expenses.

To help establish cost, you will want to request an estimate from your contractor. They will be able to include items like materials, permits, and labor. A professional will also provide a timeline of when the work can start and when it will be completed.

Hire a Reputable Contractor

Hiring the right contractor will help ensure that your remodeling project is consistent with your specifications and that you achieve your desired results. You should choose a professional that has the expertise you are looking for. Look for a contractor with more than five years of experience and a good record with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Don’t be shy about asking your remodeler for customer references.

Once you find a reputable contractor and your project begins, treating them well is another way to ensure it goes smoothly. Home remodelers appreciate honest clients who have realistic expectations, are easy to work with, and are excited about the project. Having a contractor that you can openly communicate with is essential to the success of any renovation. If you have any issues, it is crucial to let the project manager or supervisor know so they can resolve them promptly.

Detailed Contract

Once you have a plan and find the right remodeling company, you will want to put your project in writing. The most common contract for a home remodel is a “fixed price contract.” This type of contract will lock costs into place and include materials and labor. If you prefer to choose some of your own materials for your project such as cabinets, countertops, appliances and flooring, these will be included in your contract as budget items.

While you can have a fixed price for items like materials and labor costs, you must remember that any home project can still encounter unexpected, hidden problems. As we stated above, you will want to set aside 10% of your budget for issues that may come up that are out of your contractor’s control.
